The Lancaster Group Overview
The Beginning
The Lancaster Group entered the accommodation industry in 1984 with the purchase of a leasehold motel and camping ground in Paihia in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand. A small but busy tourist town, the motel enjoyed 100% occupancy over the summer months.
Seeking more control than a leasehold tenure offered, in 1986 the
Lancaster Group
went on to purchase a prime bare site in Whangarei and set about building a 16 unit motor lodge ‘Pembrooke Motor Lodge’ to meet corporate travellers needs. This motel was a great success and the
Lancaster Group
self-operated the motel for 2 years before a move to Tauranga, in the Bay of Plenty.
In Tauranga they purchased some older, freehold motels on the busy Waihi Road and revamped them for the corporate and independent traveller market.
The Lancaster Group
continued to operate motels in Tauranga throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s.
